When it comes to keys, it’s usually a good idea to have more than one copy. That way, if you get locked out, you may have a spare hidden away, or you can call a family member or neighbor who has an extra key to come let you in. With that said, you also don’t want to have too many duplicates of your keys out there, because that increases the chances of one getting lost or falling into the wrong hands.
When it comes to making duplicate keys, you should make a copy for everyone who will regularly be in your home, such as family members and friends. You also probably want to have an extra copy for yourself in case of emergencies. Be sure that you keep track of the amount of duplicates you have made and give out so that you know how many of your keys are out there.
If you have a younger child in the home who is likely to lose a key, perhaps hold off on giving them a copy. If it’s necessary that they have one, you can put the key on a necklace for them to wear or you can hide the key outside of the home for them to use and replace. If you opt for the latter choice, be sure that you pick a hiding place that isn’t obvious to thieves (i.e. under the mat, etc.) and that you show your child where the key has been hidden.
If one of the copies of your keys gets lost, or if you no longer want someone to have a copy of your key, it’s probably best to have your locks changed or rekeyed for your own safety.
