Many people wonder where the best place is to hide a spare key for your car. Some people aren’t uncomfortable with hiding a key on or around their car, and we understand that. If you are comfortable hiding your spare on your car, at least make sure to hide a key that will only open the door (and not start the engine). Here are a few spots you may want to consider hiding your spare car key:
- On the inside of your bumper: most people who choose to hide their spare keys on the inside of their bumper use some kind of magnetic hide-a-key. If you happen to lock yourself out of your car, at least your spare will be nearby. This spot comes with risks, of course, in case someone finds your key inside your bumper.
- Behind the front license plate: there’s a strong magnetic source from the front license plate, and it’s fairly well concealed. You can also purchase a license plate spare key hiding container if you decide this is the right hiding spot for you. Again – there are risks to this spot, but there are risks to every hiding spot for spare keys!
- In a tire well: you may have a difficult time finding where you can hide a key in the wheel well, but there may be a small metal ledge or a piece of the frame that’s ready to help hide your key for you.
- Under the gas cap: this is a pretty easily accessible and popular spot, and you may need to use duct tape to secure your key in place. If you have no other options, though, this spot will work.
- With someone else: with trusted neighbors, family members, or friends, you can always exchange spares just in case something happens. There may be some details to be worked out (in case you lose your first set of keys or lock them in your car), but with the help of a trusty friend, your spare can be safe.
- In the hitch receiver box: this may be the most secure of hiding spots outside of your car. You would need a two-inch hitch attached to your car already, but inside the receiver box, there’s a small safe box that requires a combination. Leave your spare in there and never lose it again!
- In your purse or wallet: you can’t go wrong with keeping your spare with you (unless, of course, you lose your spare…). The only problem with this method is that if you lose your wallet or purse, then someone may have both sets of keys.
